APPLEGROVE PUPILS REMOVE SITKAS FROM SANQUHAR WOODS

Over 80 pupils from P5 and P6 at Applegrove Primary School working on 2 afternoons have helped remove some of the non-native Sitka trees from Sanquhar Woodlands.  This work was part of their conservation project under the auspices of the John Muir Trust and aimed to improve bio-diversity in the woodlands. Wearing old gloves and outdoor clothes the children set to work. By the end of the afternoon they were able to differentiate the Sitka from the Scots Pine, the Silver Birch and the gorse. Lots of small Sitka were pulled out of the ground and were left in large piles to decompose. Well done Applegrove conservationists!
