Forres Community Woodlands Trust received a most welcome boost recently when a group of 11 volunteers from Balfour Beatty plc and SSEN joined them in their effort to tackle their on-going battle of controlling laurel, a non-native invasive species, in Sanquhar Woodlands.
Apart from our gratitude for the great job they did for us and our admiration for their work ethic it was a great pleasure for FCWT Vlounteers to spend a day in the company of such a friendly and cheerful group of people: they are a credit to their company.
The height of the laurel was considerably reduced, which means that the need for spraying the remaining growth is now a much easier task for our contractor and will require much less weedkiller. This will reduce our expenses considerably.
Although the Balfour Beatty volunteers have made a big difference there is still plenty to do before we get this challenging plant under control. With more volunteers we could make a big impact.
